Programme Description

The Genomics and Proteomics of plant systems is focused on understanding the evolutionary-based strategies of plant systems to promote their applications in next-generation technologies and medicine.

Main Goals

Thematic areas of research and their applications can be summarized as follows:

  • genome, karyotype and chromosome structure, role of telomeres in chromosome stability, genome and chromosome synteny and evolution within robust phylogenetic frameworks (phylogenomics), link between chromosome dynamics and biodiversity; ; the role of epigenetic processes in the regulation of gene expression and cellular differentiation. Factors ensuring genome stability as a tool for prevention of serious diseases. Use of the principles of natural evolution of genomes and karyotypes to develop economically important crops.
  • molecular principles of hormonal regulations, mechanisms determining the specificity and/or crosstalk of hormonal pathways, subcellular trafficking and polarity of plant cells and developmental output of these processes; Targeted manipulation of the development of crop plants to obtain desired production properties, shape and structure. Control of biomass production under extreme environmental conditions. Development of phytoremediation strategies.
  • application of metabolomics in functional genomic, diagnostic, drug metabolism and plant secondary metabolism studies and search for new biologically active compounds. The use of plants for production of biopharmaceuticals and renewable energy sources and materials.
