CEITEC and EMBL set the basis for a new era of cooperation in Brno

Scientists from CEITEC and EMBL met in Brno in order to enhance working relationships and begin new specific areas of cooperation. A two-day visit took place in Brno on 20 – 21 October 2011.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), with its main headquarters in Heidelberg and four other branches around Europe, is known as the European flagship for research in the field of molecular biology and is one of the world’s top research centres. Experts from CEITEC in structural biology, molecular biology and advanced microscopic methods had an opportunity to establish new areas of cooperation with leading experts and world-renowned top specialists in their fields.

Ten key leading representatives from CEITEC and EMBL introduced their research projects in a workshop setting as scientists revealed the substance and results of their work to each other. More than 40 CEITEC representatives participated in the workshop along with doctoral students.  This gives an indication of the scale of the gathering.

“We had a wonderful response to the seminar as well as promising results for CEITEC. The main thing we have accomplished is that we have set the foundations for long-term cooperation that we would expand on further”, summarized Mr. Ondřej Hradil, a CEITEC Deputy Director engaged in the workshop.

Several proposals for specific areas of cooperation have already originated as results of the meeting. The topics include bioinformatics, innovative sequencing techniques and development of new methods of advanced optical microscopy. The Czech Republic is not yet an EMBL member country, but negotiations on its membership are in progress. CEITEC fully supports the membership of the Czech Republic in the EMBL.
