Abstract
In this talk we review our research focused on the computational design and optimisation of magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications. These applications include magnetic particle hyperthermia for cancer therapy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic particle imaging as an alternative to MRI, and sensing for early disease detection. We first highlight the key modelling approaches useful for investigating large assemblies of magnetic particles relevant for developing these applications, including inter-particle interactions. Then we discuss the role of magnetic particle aggregation and clustering on the achievable specific heat rates in hyperthermia and compare our calculations with experiments

Biography
Ondrej Hovorka is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, UK. His research focuses on the multiscale modelling of magnetic materials to predict macroscopic properties of materials from the underlying microscopic physics. This also includes the computational design of magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications.
