Last year around 300 students from secondary schools and universities took part in the Open Day of the Faculty of Chemistry. The objective of today´s Chemistry Day is to show the public that it makes sense to study chemistry and that the fields of chemistry offer a wide area for employment of students, whether at a university, in research centres or in private companies. Today the students and public will be welcomed by students and employees of the Faculty of Chemistry and also representatives of companies involved in the field of chemistry and related spheres. “We have prepared shows of laboratories and chemical experiments; they will discover everything about the studies at the faculty. Students welcome the chance to directly meet with representatives of companies who will introduce specific possibilities of employment to them. This year they also have the possibility to speak to the representatives of CEITEC for the first time”, said Martin Weiter, the Vice-Dean for International Relations and Information Technologies of the Faculty of Chemistry, one of the organizers of the event.
Scientists from CEITEC will outline to students the possibilities of a career path and will show that it is possible to build a reasonable career in the fields of chemistry. The research in CEITEC is linked to universities as well as companies who CEITEC will closely cooperate with in the future and which are already making enquiries in research, education of experts and the renting of facilities worth more than 1.6 billion crowns. Brno is the cradle of leaders of chemical companies and the cooperation of universities and research centres with the private sector attracts large international companies in the South Moravian region and also creates new positions.
Within CEITEC the researchers at the Faculty of Chemistry have been working on interesting projects with a promising application potential since last year. “For example we are developing materials for a controlled release of medicine in the patient´s body or a special protective varnish for the replacement of natural tooth enamel which protects live dental tissues in the same way, moreover it can reduce the creation of microbial film on teeth and enable to achieve the required whiteness of teeth long- term and without negative effects, which current methods of teeth whitening have on teeth health”, Josef Jančář, the Director of the Institute of Materials Science and an employee of CEITEC, specified on the scientists´ work. The scientists concentrate themselves on the research of “SMART materials” with sensory elements, which can continuously report on its condition and report a defect of material in time. They are planning to build them e.g. in aeroplanes where smart materials could prevent putting the aeroplane out of operation.
