Martina Plisová is R&D director of Medicem, a Czech-based start-up company focused on developing ophthalmic hydrogel implants, mainly intraocular lenses. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry and Materials from Princeton University in 2007. After her PhD studies she stepped out of science for four years working as a management consultant for McKinsey and Company. She worked on projects in multiple industries (chemical, pharmaceutical, banking) and multiple functions (marketing and sales, strategy, organization). In 2011 she returned to science in a managerial role when she joined Medicem, first in a role of Executive director, directly supporting the CEO. She was responsible for defining and implementing key processes across the company, and was also responsible for the area of Human Resources. In her current role of R&D director, which she assumed in 2013, she is responsible for strategic planning of R&D activities, development of R&D capabilities, and oversight of R&D projects. She ensures interaction between R&D and other parts of Medicem, such as marketing, manufacturing and top management. She is currently very excited about Medicem’s key R&D project aimed at developing an intraocular lens post-operatively adjustable by a femtosecond laser. Martina lives in Prague with her husband and 2 children.
