International science masterminds from CEITEC have been meeting in Brno

It has only been three weeks since its approval and the Central European Institute of Technology has already welcomed its international management. During 19th – 21st June there is the first meeting of the International Scientific Advisory Board in Brno – the highest scientific advisory body of CEITEC, whose members are solely the important representatives of leading foreign scientific institutes. These independent experts assess and approve fundamental decisions concerning key issues and principles of the management of the centre. CEITEC has fully started its ambition to become a European centre of excellence.

The Central European Institute of  Technology, which is worth 5.2 billion crowns, will grow in Brno within the next three years. Three weeks ago thanks to the signature of the European Commission it became the first major project from the Operational Programme Research and Development for Innovation to be approved at all levels. CEITEC is a centre with international management, headed by the International Scientific Advisory Board, which helps to determine the basic direction of scientific focus, approves internal setting and documents of the centre.  Naturally English is the internal language of the centre.

International experts have been taking part in the preparation of the project since the very beginning. During this first official meeting the Board has been dealing with practical issues concerning the running of the centre, for instance it has been assessing the setting of internal management and together with CEITEC scientists it has been dealing with key principles on which the institute is based and will develop in the future. „During yesterday’s meeting our international management confirmed to us that the strategy and management of the whole centre truly stems from the experiences of leading international scientific institutes. If we manage to fulfil the set  principles, within a few years we can also be a successful and acclaimed centre of science,“ said the Executive Director Tomáš Hruda.

Acclaimed international experts are the members of the International Scientific Advisory Board, for example the Scientific Director of the Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna Wolfgang Knoll or  the Scientific Director of the Department of Plants System Biology from the Flemish Institute of Technology in Gent in Belgium Dirk Inzé.

„Our international colleagues were interested mainly in the form and in the specific examples of cooperation in the fields of life sciences and material sciences, the interconnection of which is the basis of science in CEITEC. They can see a high potential of CEITEC in the possibilities of research combined in this way. They agreed that the advantage of CEITEC is the utilization of specialized instrumentation and Core Facilities, in which scientists will meet regularly and have the opportunity to start and develop interdisciplinary cooperation“, the Rector of Brno University of Technology Karel Rais summed up the meeting.
