Brno’s future will be decided in Brussels now

The project of the construction of a state-of-the-art scientific centre CEITEC in Brno worth over EUR 200 mil. was sent to Brussels for the final assessment by the Ministry of Education yesterday afternoon. The finance for creating modern laboratories and facilities for 800 scientists is applied for by the Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, other Brno universities and research institutes.  It is one of the highest amounts that the Czech Republic will be applying for from the European funds within the program of Research and development for innovations. If the European Commission approves of the project, it will represent a significant move for Brno, from the view of growth of economy and position on the map of scientific centres.

The aim of the project is to create first-class conditions and facilities for the development of the research of biotechnologies, biomedicine, advanced materials and technologies. In the case of approval, modern laboratories which will concentrate state-of-the-art equipment, should grow in the University campus in Bohunice and in the campus Pod Palackého vrchem within four years. Therefore Brno has a unique chance to appear on the map of globally recognized research centres, attract international scientist, investors and a long term prosperity related to them.

The project has already succeeded in the assessment at a national level. At the beginning of the year it received 99 points from the Ministry of Education and took first place in total among major projects in the first priority axis. Based on the recommendations, the scientist have moved forward to further optimizing the instrumental equipment with respect to other projects in the region. It resulted in the reduction of a total budget by almost 1 billion Crowns. The evaluation in Brussels is the last step in the preparation of the project.

At present there is probably nobody who can imagine what a significant moment the approval of the project application will be for the South Moravian Region. But it is for sure that there are scientific institutes, pharmaceutical or engineering companies from abroad already getting in touch which are interested in using the possibilities which will be offered by facilities like for example new unique microscopes, tomographs, clean rooms and other,“ says Tomáš Hruda, the Director of the CEITEC project.

I expect the CEITEC project to be approved in Brussels. It has the last step in front it and has my full support as well as the support of the management of the South Moravian region, as it was in the previous years during the elaboration of the project“, said Michal Hašek, the President of the South Moravian Region. „I am proud that in the near future the South Moravian region is going to be famous not only for wine, trade fairs and the engineering industry, but also for globally competitive science“, added Hašek.

„The management of the City of Brno has supported the project in the long term and is aware of the potential which its implementation will bring. More students, new jobs, and the prestige of the city seen abroad are exactly why we are backing the implementation of the project“, said Roman Onderka, the Mayor of the City of Brno.
