CEITEC development launched by laying of foundation stones

The ceremonial laying of foundation stones today officially launched the construction of the Central European Institute of Technology CEITEC, the only research centre in the Czech Republic that integrates the life sciences and advanced materials and technologies. The development will take place at two sites in Brno at the same time: the University Campus of Masaryk University (MU) in Bohunice and the Brno University of Technology (BUT) campus at Pod Palackého vrchem. Researchers will move into the new laboratories by the end of 2014. The Brno universities and research institutions received funding of CZK 5.24 billion from the Research and Development for Innovation Operational Programme.

The new facilities will offer scientific laboratories with cutting-edge equipment, including “core facilities” that will be used by scientists from different disciplines. The new laboratories will also upgrade the quality of master’s and bachelor’s degree study courses in selected fields because the students will have access to the latest knowledge and state-of-the-art technology. Young researchers will thus be able to work with leading scientific teams during their studies. Access to technologies will be open also for companies involved in joint innovative projects.

Two new CEITEC buildings at MU with almost 7,000 m² for laboratories, training facilities and office space are being developed at University Campus Bohunice. The larger of the structures will be built with an unusual elliptical layout and an inner roofed atrium. It will provide space for research programmes in structural biology, genomics and proteomics of plant systems, molecular medicine, and human brain and mind research. The scientists will study cancerous cells, develop methods for selecting the best sperm, search for causes of addiction, etc. The extended first underground floor will also include greenhouse and growth climate chambers, known as phytotrons. The entire complex will contain seven core facilities with cutting-edge equipment such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers used for studying the 3D structure of substances on an atomic level, or electron microscopes enabling the studying of cell structures and other phenomena on a macromolecular level at very high resolution.

Four halls with a total area of 14,000 m² will be developed at the Pod Palackého vrchem BUT campus. They will house facilities for research programmes focusing on advanced materials and advanced nano- and microtechnologies, including three core facilities. Scientists will work for example on developing tooth or bone replacements made of polymers, nanochips, antibacterial surfaces and research robots. The construction of CEITEC BUT is unique for its size of “clean spaces” that will cover an enormous 1,050 m². In more than 200 m² the level of cleanness will meet the strictest of standards. The movement of people within such areas requires special gear such as protective suits, facemasks, goggles, face guards, footwear, etc. Technological equipment of the laboratories will allow for production and testing of samples that are not visible with a normal microscope – their dimensions a thousand times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

The tender selecting the building contractors for CEITEC MU was successful for KONSTRUKTIVA KONSIT a.s. which will develop the buildings at a cost of CZK 417 million. The winner of the tender for CEITEC BUT is a consortium of companies including UNISTAV a.s., OHL ŽS a.s., and IMOS Brno a.s. The winning offer is 344 million CZK.
