Aims of the project:

  • to initiate a long-term Czech-Icelandic collaboration in the field of plant cytogenomics
  • to extend expertise and skills of involved students and researchers through project educational and research activities
  • to perform genome analysis of selected Icelandic crucifer plant groups
  • to carry out cytogenomic studies of Icelandic and European species of Betula (birch) genus
  • to continue in joint research activities by getting involved in following international projects

Project implementation: 1.5.2015 – 30.4.2016

May 2015 – launch of the project during a visit of Czech researchers in Iceland:

  • project kick-off meeting (strategy of project implementation)
  • collection of plant material of selected crucifer species in the field
  • lecture at University of Iceland

September 2015

  • lectures and practical course of plant cytogenomics at the University of Iceland (A-Prof. Lysák, Dr. Mandáková)

October 2015

  • lectures on hybridization and polyploidy at the Masaryk University (Prof. Anamthawat-Jónsson)
  • one-month stay of B. Leduc (UI) at the RG Plant Cytogenomics, CEITEC

April 2016

  • final project meeting and mini-workshop on the achieved research results at the Masaryk University (A-Prof. Lysák, Prof. Anamthawat-Jónsson, Dr. Mandáková, Dr.  Thorbjörnsson)

Summary of the project:
During the first visit of the Czech team to Iceland and the University of Iceland (UI) the planned field trip was carried out and the planned spectrum of crucifer species was collected. During the second visit of the Czech team to UI Drs Lysak and Mandakova taught theoretical and practical courses of modern plant cytogenetics and cytogenomics. This visit was also used to discuss preliminary scientific data resulting from the spring field work. During the stay of Prof. Jonsson at the Masaryk University (MU) she lectured on plant genome evolution, hybridization and polyploidy. The UI student B. Leduc was working in the Lysak lab and learned new techniques of plant comparative cytogenomics. The second visit of the Icelandic team to MU focused on finalization of the project, discussions of scientific outcomes and collection of birch plant samples for the ongoing research in the laboratory of Prof. Jonsson. Project results were presented in three conferences, namely at the DFG Adaptomics meeting (Mainz, 02/2016), Polyploidy conference (Rovinj, Croatia, 05/2016) and International Chromosome Conference (Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, 07/2016). The collection the Icelandic crucifer species resulted in preparation of two research papers, one focused on the first discovery of Arabidopsis thaliana in Iceland and the second on karyotype and centromere evolution in the crucifer tribe Arabideae.
