More than twenty scientists from renowned institutions around the world travelled this week to Brno, so as to assess for a second time the results of the work of experts from CEITEC. Over the course of three days (September 22-24) the foreign assessors met personally with all of the CEITEC scientists and examined first and foremost the progress they had made in their work over the last two years.
An overall majority of the research groups gained the highest grade, denoting a level of research and development reaching European standards. Several of the groups were even ambitious enough to find a place among the best in the world in their field. According to preliminary results none of the groups were graded at the lowest level – that is unsatisfactory. Of fundamental importance in terms of the development and progress of CEITEC are the recommendations of these international experts showing the direction to be taken for research in several areas of the life and physical sciences.
Given that the leadership of CEITEC has available the first evaluation which took place two years ago, they will be able to compare it with this year’s results to draw conclusions for the coming years. Those groups that have utilised their potential, followed the recommendations of the international evaluators and focussed on international cooperation have made progress and remained at the top in their fields. Those that were unable to respond to the challenges, and ignored recommendations, have once more been given a poor assessment. The very existence of these groups will be the subject of discussion in the coming weeks.
CEITEC has an opportunity in the near future to find a place among the best European centres. A further evaluation of the scientific potential and results achieved by CEITEC scientists will take place once again in two years.
